The Black Panther Trailer: 6 Things That We Learned

The much anticipated Black Panther trailer is finally out.It has not broken any records in terms of the most viewed trailer for a Marvel movie but the trailer is certainly vibrant and action packed. Black Panther was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Captain America: Civil War and was central to the movie’s plot. The movie did not delve into the origin story of T’Challa yet it had just about enough to get us excited about the upcoming The Black Panther Movie. Up until now, Marvel had been teasing us with the idea of a solo outing for the Wakandan King by introducing Ulysses Klaue played by Andy Serkis in Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which Klaue has his left arm blown off by Ultron and Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. Let’s break down the Black Panther trailer and see if we have missed out anything:

Ulysses Klaue in captivity

Black Panther Trailer

The trailer opens with Everett Ross interrogating Ulysses Klaue about his knowledge on Wakanda. Ulysses Klaue is shown as a smuggler who is the only outsider to have managed to leave Wakanda alive to tell tales about it. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Klaue reveals a hidden stash of Vibranium that he smuggled from Wakanda. During the interrogation, T’Challa and Okoye quietly observe the proceedings. In the comics, Ulysses Klaue dons a sonic emitter in place of a right hand which he uses to emit high frequencies of sound to weaken his opponents.

The Warrior Falls

In this Black Panther trailer, we finally get an insight of the city of Wakanda. It looks to be very technologically advanced and hidden from the rest of the world for important reasons. We can see the T’Challa’s iconic Black Panther Jet enter The Warrior Falls where the new king of Wakanda is to be coronated. This is the scene where T’Challa finally takes over the reign from his father and becomes The Black Panther. The coronation process is carried out by Zuri played by Forrest Whittaker, who is shown as some sort of a Shaman or an important religious figure. In the comics, Zuri is a warrior and a key advisor of the King Of Wakanda. This is followed by scene in which some armed uninvited guests have entered Wakanda and greeted fiercely by the Black Panther. Let’s just say that it is unwise to attack The Black Panther in his own den.

Enter Erik Killmonger

Black Panther Trailer

The big bad of the movie is Erik Killmonger played by Michael B. Jordan. He is the first obstacle that T’Challa will face after becoming the King of Wakanda. Erik Killmonger is also seen wearing a tribal mask which is a reference to the one he wears in the comics but don’t expect him to wear it too often in the movie. In this scene, he conducts a heist of the facility where Ulysses Klaue is held captive and helps Klaue escape. Erik Killmonger has a pretty depressing backstory in the comics. His family helped Klaue in capturing Vibranium in Wakanda and when this came to the knowledge of T’Chaka, father of T’Challa, Killmonger’s family was exiled from the city. The only purpose embedded in the mind of Erik Killmonger is to seek revenge for the wrong done to his family. Klaue and Erik Killmonger look to be working together to hatch a plan to take down the new king of Wakanda, T’Challa.

The Dora Milaje

Black Panther Trailer

The Dora Milaje have already been introduced earlier in Captain America: Civil War. In one of the scenes of the movie, Okoye, one of the members of The Dora Milaje warns Black Widow “move or you will be moved”. The Dora Milaje is not just a group of female bodyguards of the Black Panther, each of the member is from a different tribe in Wakanda. These women are the most exceptional of their own tribe and worthy to be the potential wife of the Black Panther. In the trailer, they are seen as donning remarkable red uniforms and fighting against the people who try to harm the king of Wakanda. Nakia played by Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is also one of the members of The Dora Milaje.

The Royal Family

Black Panther Trailer

T’Challa is not the only living person from the family tree of the former Black Panther. He has a sister Shuri played by Letitia Wright and is seen to be wielding Panther shaped blasters on each hand. She is not by any means a damsel in distress, she is as ferocious as T’Challa and is not afraid to don the role of the Black Panther herself. In the comics, she does eventually don the role of Black Panther but we do not expect to see that anytime soon in the MCU. Another character introduced in the trailer was the step-mother of T’Challa and the mother of Shuri, Ramonda. In the times of internal armed conflicts, it is necessary to keep the family close.

M’Baku/Man Ape in the Black Panther Trailer

Erik Killmonger is not the only villain in the movie. It looks like the new King of Wakanda will face enemies from all the four directions. M’Baku also known as Man Ape played by Winston Duke is a major threat to T’Challa as he too wants to be the King of Wakanda. M’Baku is the leader of White Gorilla Cult who wants Wakanda to go back to its primitive ways. The final scene shows Black Panther leaping off a toppling vehicle and making a superhero landing on another car.

This should cover every scene of significance in the Black Panther trailer. If we have missed out anything, please mention it in the comment section below.
