It looks like Marvel has finally found the perfect cast for Carol Danvers also known as Captain Marvel. Sources at Variety have reported that Brie Larson is in talks with Marvel to play Captain Marvel, one of the most iconic and popular female superheroes. Many of us will remember Larson from her Oscar winning performance in the “Room“. Many rumors had been circulating on who possibly could don the role of Carol Danvers, some big names like Ronda Rousey and Emily Blunt were linked. Ronda Rousey even expressed her interest in the playing the role. The first choice of Marvel to play the role has come to light and she is Brie Larson.
In the comics, Carol Danvers is an officer of United States Air Force and after getting caught in an accident with Captain Mar-Vell, her DNA is fused with that of Captain Mar-Vell which results in her getting superpowers. Carol Danvers assumes the mantle of Captain Marvel to honor the dead Captain Mar-Vell.
The casting of Brie Larson at this point of time becomes very important because Captain Marvel has been confirmed to appear in the Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and she will get her standalone movie only after the movie. So, it makes sense for Marvel to announce her as Captain Marvel. Very little has come to light about the movies sandwiched between the two Infinity War movies. The script of Captain Marvel is under work and will be put together by Nicole Perman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out).
Marvel has made no mentions on the storyline and are also undecided on the director of the movie. However, some sources say that Marvel is looking at two potential names for directing the movie. According to these sources, Marvel is considering Niki Caro and Jennifer Kent as possible directors of the movie. Kent’s little horror film The Babadook made quite a splash when it came out in 2014, and Caro has been around since her 2002 breakout movie Whale Rider. She’s currently working on The Zookeeper’s Wife with Jessica Chastain (Crimson Peak), Daniel Bruhl (who played Zemo in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War) and Iddo Goldberg (Salem), and is also working on a Maria Callas biopic starring Noomi Rapace (Prometheus).
Although Marvel have officially not given out a statement regarding the casting of Brie Larson, Chris Evans has already voiced his opinion in favor of Brie Larson. According to a report by Comicbook.com, he said that “just heard about that. I really hope that happens! I love Brie Larson. We did a movie together back in ’09, Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I cannot say enough about Brie Larson. I think she’s phenomenal, and I really hope that happens.” Chris Evans was not shy about praising her and it may be because of his working relationship with Brie Larson, they both had roles in “Evil Exes” and in the cult comedy “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World“.
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, she seems like the type of actress who would fit perfectly for the role of Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel is currently slated to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
