Some huge news has just come out from Warner Bros. and DC Comics, an origin movie of the most iconic Batman universe villain, the Joker, is being developed by the studios. Deadline has reported that Todd Phillips will direct the movie and script is co-written by him and Scott Silver (scriptwriter of 8 Mile). The legendary Martin Scorsese is also believed to produce the film.

This untitled movie will be a separate project from the continuity of the DC Cinematic Universe which includes movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and the upcoming The Justice League. This movie will be under a new banner which will allow the studio to display new story lines along with different actors playing the iconic characters.

Jared Leto will not reprise his role as the Joker in this untitled movie. Although, he is still set to take up the role again in the mainstream DC Cinematic Universe and in movies like Suicide Squad 2 and the Harley Quinn spin-off. The studio is trying to rope in a younger actor to play the Clown Prince of Crime.

Todd Phillips to direct a Joker Origin movie?

The setting of the movie has also been revealed by Deadline. According to their report, it will be a “Gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.” The movie is in its initial stages as Todd Phillips and Scott Silver are already developing a script but the production date is yet to be decided along with the release date.

Todd Phillips to direct a Joker Origin movie?

Todd Phillips can look at many origin stories of the Joker provided in the comics varying from The Red Hood, which is the most popular one of them all, to Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke. The main question that arises is whether it is a good idea to dig into the history of the Joker.

Jerry Robinson, who wrote DC Comics in the 1940s and also known as the creator of the Joker has an answer to such a question “They’ve given many origins of the Joker, how he came to be,” Robinson said. That doesn’t seem to matter—just how he is now. I never intended to give a reason for his appearance … it takes away some of the essential mystery.

This is all the information we have on the untitled Joker Origins movie but we will definitely keep you updated on any new development that will come our way. This should definitely keep the DC fans buzzing for some time.
