Marvel’s The Defenders is set to tie in all the Marvel streaming shows together including Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and The Iron Fist. Marvel have remained tight-lipped on the mini-series but we have managed to gather pieces of information from Mike Colter portraying Luke Cage and the costume designer of the mini-series, Stephanie Maslansky. Both of them have confirmed that Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra will be playing the main antagonist of the show.

In an interview with TV Guide, Mike Colter has revealed that the events in the standalone shows of The Defenders are considerably connected and Alexandra will tie all these events together. Alexandra presumably being the leader of the Hand has had a major influence on the difficulties faced by The Defenders in their standalone shows. He said that:

The villains that we’re dealing with are a combination of several entities, um, and they all have something to do with our separate stories that have played out in each of our own individual series.  So this has been going on for a while. It wasn’t obvious in each individual series, but in this series you’ll find out that the things that happened to all of us basically were all because of one entity and that’s what’s gonna kind of tie things together and then we’ll see that, we’ll understand that, and before you know it, eventually we’ll fight together… or not.

During an interview with International Business Times, costume designer Stephanie Maslansky seemingly confirmed that Alexandra is the leader of The Hand:

I think that she’s clearly a baddie, and she’s the head of an ancient organization which is grounded in the comics. I hope that her wardrobe reflects that kind of ancientness. I hope I haven’t said too much. I hope Marvel doesn’t come after me.

Sigourney Weaver set play Alexandra

The Marvel fans have not wasted any time in trying to figure out the mysterious role played by Sigourney Weaver. The popular theory that has been going around is that Alexandra is the human vessel of the demon known as the Beast. Stephanie Maslansky has already stated that Alexandra will be donning an ancient look and it is not hard to presume that Alexandra or the entity possessing her has been around many years. The Beast is worshipped by the members of the Hand, and has been said to have taught magical techniques to the members of the Hand. This probably explains the resurrection of Ninja Assassins from the dead. In the comics, He has had history with every member on The Defenders roster and it will difficult to rule out the option of Alexandra being the vessel of The Beast.

We will just have to wait and see if Alexandra is indeed a human possessed by a demon when The Defenders roll out on Netflix this August. What’s your theory for how Alexandra fits into all this?
