(Warning: Spoilers for Batman Arkham City follow. Also, this article does not reveal the Arkham Knight’s true identity)
Batman would be incomplete without the vast array of spectacular villains. Whether it’s the Joker, Ra’s al Ghul, Two-Face, Bane, Mr. Freeze, Riddler, or even foes of lesser renown like Wrath, Zeiss, Victor Zsasz; the list goes on and on. In the recent years, game developer Rocksteady Studios has produced the Batman Arkham series with its third and final installment ‘Batman Arkham Knight’ set to hit stores today. The first two games have received widespread critical acclaim and now, the bar is set higher than ever. Although the prominent cast of villains, particularly the Joker and Scarecrow have been an integral part of the games, Rocksteady has created a new villain this time around, the Arkham Knight.
The Arkham Knight is a repugnant version of Batman and first appeared in Batman: Arkham Knight #1 (February 2015). His connection with Batman is unknown, but the game’s ending supposedly sheds light on this matter. His first notable appearance was after the Joker’s death in Arkham City (spoiler alert!) and ever since, has kept a close watch on the Batman. He wears a militarized Batsuit with an Arkham symbol on his chest. The Knight appears to have knowledge of Batman’s alter-ego (Bruce Wayne) and his appearance is designed to mock the Dark Knight and attack him on a psychological level. He is vengeful yet calculated, and does not hesitate to kill those who he deems deserving of death. When Scarecrow asks him about his immense hatred for Batman, he says that no one would ever understand.
He claims to be able to predict Batman’s actions :
Always defending the weak and the helpless. That’s what I like about you. You’re predictable. And that’s why we’re gonna win. We know your move before you do. We know how you think!
— The Arkham Knight to Batman
While being interviewed by Game Informer, game director Sefton Hill said that “[Rocksteady] wanted to introduce someone who could really challenge Batman to go head to head with him in lots of different ways.”
With outstanding physical conditioning, state of the art weaponry, high skill in psychological warfare and even an entire army under his command, the Arkham Knight is definitely a force to be reckoned with, and may just be a perfect opponent for Batman on a physical, emotional and mental level.
