Every comic we ship is bagged and boarded. Here’s why it matters, and how to choose the right supplies for your own collection.

What bags and boards do

A bag is a clear sleeve that keeps out dust, moisture and finger oils. A board is a stiff backing that stops bends, creases and warping. Together, they’re the foundation of comic storage.

Choosing a bag

Polypropylene Crystal OPP
Clarity Good Exceptional
Feel Light and flexible Stiffer, more rigid
Wrinkles Can wrinkle over time Resists wrinkles
Cost Affordable Higher
Best for Big collections, everyday books Favourite books, display, special editions

Many collectors use both: polypropylene for everyday books, Crystal OPP for the special ones. Polypropylene bags should be replaced every few years.

Choosing a board

Acid-free boards won’t pass acid into your comic, which helps prevent yellowing and brittle pages. Thickness is measured in points (PT):

Board thickness, in thousandths of an inch
  • 18PT18
  • 20PT20
  • 24PT24

A 24PT board is about 0.024 inches thick and noticeably stiffer than 18PT or 20PT boards.

Planning to have a favourite book graded by CGC or CBCS? Keeping it bagged and boarded until then helps protect its condition. For more on caring for paper, see the Library of Congress preservation guides.

A few simple habits

  1. Match the size. Use the bag and board made for your comic’s size: current, Silver Age and so on.
  2. Store them upright. Keep comics standing in a box, out of direct sunlight, in a cool, dry place.
  3. Handle with care. Hold your favourite books by the edges, with clean, dry hands.
